This works well on so , impressionistic sky fabrics. The third way I routinely quilt skies is with a blend of quilting and thread painting. This is done using a long back-and-forth motion in variegated threads that do not necessarily match the sky fabric. The fourth way to quilt a sky is by using a long, flowing horizontal V-shaped curve. In a variegated thread, this design looks natural and coordinates with the style of strip piecing itself. Long, wavy quilting lines can get bumpy in places to suggest clouds, as shown here in Lone Cypress Tree (page 120).
Creating a sunset or sunrise can be a bit more challenging. Though you will want to use your boldest, most intense golden yellows, your sky will glow more if you use them sparingly. Use bold, intense, pure color with the following rule in mind: Less is more. ) Luminous sunsets and sunrises are created by using just a bit of rich color alongside fabrics that are whiter or lighter in value. Skies Tip One important thing to know about sky fabrics is that if you use a print with horizontal cloud formations and create your sky using vertical strips, your sky will look like blue-and-white zebra stripes.
The farther away the water is, the straighter the line of stitching should be. QUILTING HILLS AND MOUNTAINS Hills and mountains can be stippled, or they can be quilted by creating jagged crevasses down the slopes. Begin by quilting a somewhat parallel line following the angles of your strips. Then break off from quilting even parallel lines and bunch some together more closely and some farther apart. This technique works with both vertical and horizontal strip-pieced mountains. ) You can break up larger bluff shapes by creating crevasses and hills within a larger pieced mountain.
