His first semester marks in anatomy and physical chemistry were deemed too low for him to continue without remedial course work. Granted an 'honorable dismissal' by the medical school, Xuma decided a change was in order. He bade his friends in Minnesota farewell and headed to Chicago in hopes of remedying his academic deficiencies and finding work. 38 The nine months Xuma spent in Chicago in 1921 proved to be a time of considerable anxiety. Short of money and uncertain of his future, Xuma launched a determined effort to support himself and find a way to re-enter medical school.

Some of the friends Xuma made at these and other YMCA-sponsored events would later help him find jobs and sources of financial assistance. Besides his involvement in Christian student activities, Xuma also was a member of the College of Agriculture's debating society. 30 Perhaps the person whom Xuma came to know and respect most during his years at the University was William Riley, head of the Department of Entomology and Economic Zoology in the College of Agriculture. Riley had arrived at the University in 1918 after 19 years teaching at Cornell.

Her first move was to help Xuma land a job as a shipping clerk for Chicago's Methodist Book Concern. As Evelyn Nicholson's interest in Xuma's career was taking root, another patron appeared on the 38 Alfred B. Xuma horizon. A Dr Justus Matthews of Minneapolis had learned of Xuma's precarious financial situation from some churchgoers in the Twin Cities and offered to help the South African with his medical school tuition. In October 1921; Matthews sent Xuma a check for $125. 39 Intent on re-entering the University of Minnesota's medical school, Xuma used his time in Chicago to strengthen his academic credentials.
