These additional attacks were designed to extend the breach and to deter any movement of enemy reserves from north of the La Bassée Canal which could counterattack the main French thrust. Having advised General Foch that his First Army would support the French attack towards Vimy Ridge by undertaking an offensive against the German front in the area of Neuve Chapelle, Sir John French issued his orders from the British Advanced Headquarters at Hazebrouck on 4th May. The First Army will take the offensive on 8th May.
The Indian Corps relieved I Corps of the 1500 yards wide front between the Orchard Redoubt (1300 yards north of Chocolat Menier Corner) and Neuve Chapelle, and the 47th (London) Division took over the 600 yard south end of the front between Cuinchy and Chocolat Menier Corner, thus enabling I Corps to assemble the 2nd Division as reserve behind the 1st Division which was to be concentrated on an attack front of some 1300 yards width. Abutting the 1st Division, the Meerut Division of the Indian Corps was assembled on an 800 yards wide attack front, and the Lahore Division, much reduced after having assisted the Second Army fight in the battle of Ypres during the last week of April, took over the remainder of the front line up to Neuve Chapelle.
