He also undertook a series of breeding bird censuses at varied locations, from Coalpits Wash to Lava Point, and several of these sites also were censused in winter. Finally, he prepared an annotated list of all the known species (Gifford 1987); that manuscript was never completed due to his untimely death in 1988. My involvement with this book was largely due to the initial suggestion and encouragement of Vic Vieira, Zion Park's Chief of Resource Management and Research. And a few more northern species, such as male Rufous Hummingbirds, may already put in their appearance. Generally, the high country bird population probably peaks in mid-July; immature birds, as well as those that have moved onto the higher terraces from their breeding grounds in the canyons and lower terraces, are present. A visit to the high country in summer may result in finding as many as 45 to 55 bird species in a day. The best localities for bird finding are in the vicinity of the Kolob Reservoir and Blue Springs Lake.

There is no better indicator of an area's winter bird populations than the annual CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS (CBCs). On one day each winter, within a two-week period around Christmas, CBC participants count all the birds they can find within one established 15-mile diameter circle. The Zion National Park circle, with its center at the West Temple, includes a portion of Zion Canyon and the Virgin River Valley to Virgin, Utah, and portions of the Kolob Terrace.
