The direct formulation has been used by Shaw and Friedman29*'17) for transient acoustic scattering problems by the use of retarded potential techniques, by Banaugh and Goldsmith2)' 3) for time-harmonic acoustic and elastic problems, and by Jaswon and Ponter21) for torsion problems.
