Between Cayucos Point and Cayucos Creek, a shallow reef extends a long distance offshore. At low tide much of the reef is exposed, revealing a vast network of tide pools. Several sheltered landing spots offer easy access to the tide pools. Offshore, harbor seals and sea otter are commonly seen. San Luis Obispo County 47 Landing Land on the sand beach west of the Cayucos Pier. Conditions are frequently calm, but a surf landing may be necessary. What to do afterward You will probably be totally starved by the time you reach Cayucos.

Over two dozen threatened and endangered species live in the watershed, including: peregrine falcon, brown pelican, sea otter, black rail, snowy plover, steelhead trout, salt marsh bird’s beak, and Morro manzanita. At high tide it is possible to paddle a short distance up Chorro Creek, which is one of several freshwater creeks feeding the estuary. Check your tide tables to avoid getting stuck in the mud flats on an outgoing tide. Baywood Park, a quaint waterfront village at the southern end of the estuary, has a landing dock, shops and restaurants.

During relatively calm conditions, sheltered landings can be found at six and eight and three-quarters miles. There is an old fisherman’s shack on the bluff overlooking the cove at eight and three-quarters miles. If you decide to go ashore, stay on the beach; the bluff-top property is all privately owned. Because this section of coast is so remote, you never know what you may stumble across on shore. Beach combing is an adventure and the tide pools are pristine. Harbor seals haulout on many of the offshore rocks and sea otters are abundant.
