Trim. Sew from corner to corner. Completed diagonal seam Press the entire strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. With raw edges even, pin the binding to the front edge of the quilt a few inches away from a corner, and leave the first few inches of the binding unattached. Start sewing, using a 1/4˝ seam allowance. Stop 1/4˝ away from the first corner (see Step 1), and backstitch one stitch. Lift the presser foot and needle. Rotate the quilt one-quarter turn. Fold the binding at a right angle so it extends straight above the quilt and the fold forms a 45° angle in the corner (see Step 2).

Make 40 units by sewing a dark 2. Sew together a set of 2 half-square triangle units from Step 1 with a background square on either end. Press. Make 2 of these sets and attach them to each end of the center rectangle unit. Press. 50 COLORIFIC triangle (all of a single color family but different from the previous border) to a background triangle, or see Half-Square Triangle Units (page 49). Press. Sew together 2 rows of 12 units each to form 2 side borders. Press. Sew a row to either side of the rectangle.

Feel free to use as many fabrics and coordinates from the collection as you choose, but be sure to select some additional fabrics containing the hues just to the right or left (or both) of the collection colors on the color wheel. Most collections will include a variety of values and print motifs, but only slight variations in hues; essentially, all reds are the same, all greens are the same, and so on. It is this slight variety of hues that can be elaborated on. Adding a validator or adhesive fabric (page 20) will go a long way toward creating a more lively color scheme.
