With an overprint, the background color is the same shade on the face and back and the print design is darker than the background. Discharge Printing With discharge prints fabrics are dyed prior to printing, then the design is applied with a chemical that bleaches out the color of the originally dyed fabric. One example is a white micro dot on a navy ground. The fabric is dyed navy, then the dots are “printed” with a chemical that takes away the navy color. You can identify these fabrics because: • the background color is the same shade on the face and back of the cloth; • the print design area is white or a different color than the background; or • if you look closely at the back of the fabric, you can see traces of the original background color in the print design area.

If you do not preshrink your fabric, you have the option of washing it after it is finished, which would give more surface texture and added strength to the overall item. Differential Shrinkage One problem that is fairly common is differential shrinkage. This is where two fabrics with different finishes are sewn together. This presents a problem at seams where one fabric shrinks differently from the other. The result is puckering. This can also occur when sewing the same fabric in different orientations—one seam lengthwise and one seam crosswise.

They also have very good lightfastness, but rubbing (crocking) and washing can accelerate color loss and fading. Oftentimes the binders tend to stiffen the cloth, which can be a problem in some end uses, but new finishes are counteracting this problem more and more. 36 F r o m F i b e r t o F a b r i c As to the durability of any of these colorants, most textile operations have a quality control laboratory that ensures the fabric leaving that particular plant will pass specifications outlined by the customer (converter).
